Lagos in an effort to develop taekwondo, the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) will introduce Deodo Gen 2 system, the latest taekwondo gadget, at the 2018 National Youth Games (NYG) billed for September.
Deodo Gen 2 system is a taekwondo fighting electronic gadget worn on the head and body by athletes for scoring purposes.
Chika Chukwumerije, the Technical Director of NTF, told NAN on Wednesday that the forthcoming NYG would be the first tournament in Nigeria where the technology would be used.
Chukwumerije said that there was the need to take advantage of the NYG to create awareness of the technology for young athletes to get familiar with it.
“The present Elizabeth Binga led-board of NTF is passionate about youth development as regards getting them acquainted with modern competition technologies and rules.
“This drive has inspired us to bring Deodo Gen 2 taekwondo system in the country, and to take advantage of the NYG to introduce the innovation.
“It is the latest system sanctioned by the World Taekwondo in championships, and we cannot be left behind but follow the trend and get our youths upgraded,” he said.
He said that introduction of the technology became necessary to enable national athletes to compete favourably with their counterparts from other countries.
The Olympian urged state coaches and taekwondo athletes for the NYG to enhance their preparations and improve their skills with the device.
“We really want to tackle challenges affecting our athletes’ performances in championships.
“Among athletes that will participate in this NYG are future Olympians, and we must bring in innovations to make their foundation strong,” he added.
NAN reports that the fourth edition of the annual NYG aimed at talent discovery and grassroots sports development will hold in Ilorin from Sept. 7 to Sept. 17.
Only athletes aged 15 years and below will take part in the game. (NAN)
