Speaking against the backdrop of the team reassembling on September 1 for the AFCON qualifier against Seychellse early next month, Siasia said, “the coach has his work cut out. As a Nigerian, I expect that the team qualify for the Nations Cup That is the least expected of them because we have not qualified for two consecutive AFCON tournaments.”

But the former Super Eagles forward is not happy that the domestic league is crippled. “For months now, the league is shut down, nobody is playing; nobody has kicked a ball in the domestic league and they are fighting over who is the NFF president.

“Now we are talking about the national team where are we going to get the players from?” he asked.

Siasia would not be consoled by the fact that the Super Eagles is a squad of foreign based players. “What would have happened, if other countries were not having strong leagues where Nigerian players ply their trade?

“We don’t have a youth development programme that is why we are always going abroad to gather players to come and play for us. It’s not good enough.”
