The number one bestselling author and former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Pastor Reno Omokri and the Statistician General of the Federation/CEO Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics, Dr Yemi Kale, have disagreed over a report that claimed 7.9 million Nigerians became unemployed under just 21 months of President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress, APC, government.

The report was claimed to have been released by the NBS.

Pastor Omokri, in a series of tweets on Thursday, decried what he said was the rate of unemployment in the country, saying, based on the said report released by the National Bureau of Statistics, that 7.9 million Nigerians became unemployed in just 21 months of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress, APC, government.

Pastor Omokri also claimed that the Statistician General of the Federation/CEO Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics, Dr Yemi Kale, whom he said was appointed during a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government, did not disappoint.

He said, however, that  “by the jobs report NBS released showing 7.9 million Nigerians unemployed in 21 months of @MBuhari and @OfficialAPCNg, this govt has failed!”

According to him, Under 16 years of PDP’s rule, that Nigeria never experienced such kind of massive unemployment.

According to him, “An @OfficialPDPNig government appointed @sgyemikale as head of the National Bureau of Statistics and the man has not disappointed us in PDP. By the jobs report NBS released showing 7.9 million Nigerians unemployed in 21 months of @MBuhari and @OfficialAPCNg this govt has failed!”

“History will record that the trigger for the current dismantling of the @Mbuhari led @OfficialAPCNg administration is this unprecedented job loss report by @SGYemiKale’s NBS. For 16 years that @OfficialPDPNig governed Nigeria, we never experienced such massive unemployment.”

However, the Statistician General of NBS, Dr Kale denied Reno’s claims on the NBS’s report, saying it is untrue.

Dr. Kale however said that the NBS’s last report was on unemployment for third quarter of 2017 and with the update beamed to the second quarter of 2018.

According to him, “This is fake news. NBS never released any such report. NBS last report was on unemployment for q3 2017 with d update up to q2 2018 in progress. Let’s kindly keep NBS away from politics or fake news. We do not support politisation of data, neither do we respect people that do so.”

However, user of the micro-blogging site, Twitter, were quick to join the argument, with many siding Pastor Omokri and providing evidence of the said report being widely carried in most national dailies.

A user, Bolarinwa S. Abiola with handle, @BSAbiola pointed out to Dr. Kale saying, “The news was posted by @channeltv.”

But Dr. Kale replied saying, “And as u can see or I hope u can see it It was published in December 2017 and covers up to q3 2017. NOT a new report in July 2018 about job loses in the last 21 months and not even about job losses either.”

Another user, #NigerianLivesMatter with handle, @inspiredkeny asked, “But frankly how do you guys get data about job loses in country like Nigeria..You cant keep pushing data to us without us questioning the credibility of the source and process of the data. N.B. I don’t belong to APC or PDP.. I am just a Nigerian seeking for honest answers.”

Again, Dr. Kale replied, “Try and spend more time reading he report which contains the methodology in detail and less time on Twitter and u won’t have to ask such questions.”

For Bolu Oluwagbesan, @boludmaestro, “You don’t have to be hard on him. He was asking a very honest question. How do you guys gather data. Please educate us, send us a link. Thanks”

In response, Jerry @JerryEugene, said, “Not trying to take sides, but I observed the man did state that you can find all the details which include methodology within the report. Doesn’t that answer the question sir?”
