An unidentified motorboy attached to a tanker on Tuesday died after a fatal crash involving three trucks on the Sagamu-Benin expressway in Ogun.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ijebu-Ode.
Akinbiyi, who said the accident happened at about 8:35 am at the J4 Bridge on the expressway, disclosed that a SCANIA truck marked Edo BEN 539 XB was hit in a headlong collision by the tanker.
The tanker, a MACK model truck, had registration number Lagos MUS 480 XM.
“ According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the tanker caused the accident due to wrongful overtaking on his side.
“ He left his own side of the road and faced the oncoming traffic which led to the collision with the other truck coming from the Lagos end.
“The accident also affected the truck he was trying to overtake, a Mercedes-Benz marked Lagos FKJ 954 XU.
“Three males were injured, including the driver of the tanker.
“The motor boy attached to the tanker died on the spot.
“Officials of TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Commission were on ground to control the traffic situation,” Akinbiyi said.
Akinbiyi explained that both the dead and two of the injured victims were taken to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode while the three vehicles were towed to Ogbere Police Station.
“The tanker driver, who caused the crash, is being treated at a private hospital in Ijebu-Ode.
“He is still receiving treatment there. Hopefully, if he survives it, he would be referred to Ogbere Police Station with a view to prosecuting him,” Akinbiyi added. (NAN)
