On day three of the African Athletics Championships, Nigerians had plenty to cheer as Ese Brume, Chioma Onyekwere and the women 4x100m quartet featuring Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor all won gold to increase Nigeria’s tally so far to five.
In the long jump Brume set the tone in the event she was tipped to win, She didn’t disappoint as she recorded her second best performance of the season an 6.83m effort to clinch the gold on the fourth jump. She did 6.74m in the second jump.
Onyekwere was too hot to handle in the women discus throw as she heaved 58.09m to win the gold. Compatriot Chinwe Okoro settled for silver with 57.37m. Senekal Ischke of South Africa was third with 53.82m
But it was when the women 4x100m stepped into the fray that the home crowd got excited. Joy Udo Gabriel started, Okagbare-Ighoteguonor seconded, Tobi Amusan gave it a leg, while Rosemary Chukwu finished it off with yards to spare. Despite Marie Josee Ta Lou’s effort to close the gap, the Nigerian team was already home and dry at 43.77 seconds.
