HONOURABLE Joseph Shazin is the current chairman of Kwali Area council in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. If achievements in office and delivery of democracy dividends are still the criteria for seeking higher positions then the aspiration of Hon.Shazin to go to the House of Representatives in 2019 to represent Abuja South federal constituency is legitimate and deserves the support of all and sundry. Abuja South federal constituency comprises of Kwali, Kuje, Abaji and Gwagwalada area councils.
He has used his position as the chairman of the Kwali Area council to transform the area and made significant impact on the lives of the residents. To realise this he embarked on several people-oriented projects in the area council, and today Kwali has become a shining example of how a local government can perform in the interest of majority of the people.
For example, the Shazin administration has made regular payment of salaries a priority while several life-changing projects are on-going across the length and breadth of the area council. The administration has made interventions in the education sector with the rehabilitation and equipping of schools. Similarly, the road infrastructure in the area is being upgraded and bridges are also under construction.
On the health sector, the Kwali area council has ensured that the various children immunisation programmes are diligently executed as a way of guaranteeing quality healthcare for the residents of the area council. In this regard, the council has also embarked on regular immunisation against polio which continues to pose a major challenge in the Northern part of the country. His focus on primary healthcare as a panacea for the enjoyment of good health is yielding expected results in the area council.
As a way of maintaining peace and security in the area council, the chairman regularly empower the local chiefs, community leaders and security agencies. He also encourages collaborative efforts among the various security outfits, as well as citizen-government cooperation.
Realising the benefits of food security in a community, the Hon.Shazin administration has continued to render support to the farmers and this has led to a boost in the agricultural sector. The area council also facilitate the provision of soft loans to the farmers in the area.
In a bid to tackle youth unemployment and to alleviate poverty, the area council recently commenced the recruitment of junior staff. This policy has resonated well with the people of the area council as their wards are being given job opportunities.
Taking cognizance of his numerous achievements in the Kwali Area council, there is no doubt that Hon.Shazin stands in a good stead to contest and win the House of Representatives seat in the Federal Capital Territory. If he emerges victorious, there is no doubt that he will adequately represent his people and make the desired impact. There is no doubt that he will bring his wealth of experience as a two-term chairman, former teacher, politician, secretary of education and administrator to bear in his representation of his people.
Considering the enormous challenges facing the indigenous people of the federal capital, it is expected that they will make an informed choice regarding those who will represent them at the National Assembly and in my view Hon. Shazin qualifies for the position. Therefore, the 2019 elections provide a unique opportunity for the people to elect selfless leaders like Hon. Shazin who has remained a grassroots politician, humble, humane and dedicated to the cause of his people.
His foray into politics less than a decade ago has been a source of blessing to the people of Kwali area council, and by extension the entire Federal Capital Territory. As an educationist, he has empowered his people by making them appreciate the usefulness and benefits inherent in acquiring knowledge. Thus, he has emerged as a man of the people as his constituents repose confidence in him. His ability to connect with the masses on a daily basis has further endeared him to both the low and mighty in the Kwali area council and its surroundings.
Today, many indigenes of Kwali have gained admission into higher institutions while others have also graduated based on the moral and financial support rendered to them by the Shazin administration. Even the workers of the area council are not left out in the capacity-building policy of the Shazin administration as they periodically attend workshops and seminars aimed at enhancing their productivity and capacity.
Going by the permutations on the upcoming House of Representatives elections in the Federal Capital Territory, Shazin is being pencilled to carry the day, and this is based on the love his people have for him and his achievements as a two time chairman of Kwali area council. Even the traditional institutions seem to be favourably disposed to his candidacy and eventual emergence as their representative.
