Counters report by a group that incompetence was the reason for DHQ’s action.
As more reaction continue to trail the deployment of Maj Gen Anthony Atolagbe the former commander of operation safe Haven, a coalition of civil society groups, Network of Civil Society Organizations for peace and Development, Plateau State chapter, has said even as it welcome the appointment and redeployment of Major General Chris Chukwudi Agundu as the new Commander of Operation Safe Haven, the timing of redeployment of Major General Anthony Atolagbe out of Plateau State by the Defence Headquarters, was not the best decision at this time.
The organization also bemoaned claim by a group, Plateau State Good Governance Watch, that Atolagbe’s redeployment out of the state was due to his incompetence in handling the state’s crisis, saying the group which made the spurious and sponsored claim was a faceless one not known by anyone in the state civil society community in plateau state and Nigeria and so, should not be accorded recognition in any way.
The Network of CSOs, in a press statement signed by its Plateau State Coordinator, Dr. Panshak Golu and Barr Salis Jingri Secretary, respectively and released to the media, Friday, said it was saddened by the group’s claim given that General Atolagbe made significant inroads in ending the state’s age- long crisis and all lovers of peace on the plateau will attest to this fact .
While it described Major General Agundu as “another square peg in in a square hole” as far as the task of restoring peace on the Plateau is concerned, the Network of CSOs insisted that leaving Atolagbe to finally accomplish his task would have been the best option by the military authorities.
“We know that Major General Agundu, who has been posted to replace Major General Anthony Atolagbe is also competent and his professionalism is not in doubt. Our only challenge is the timing of the redeployment as it would clearly affect the realization of peace on the Plateau. Our worries are not misplaced but rather borne out of patriotism and facts, “it said.
It said:”It is utter and sheer falsehood that the redeployment was done based on incompetence of Major General Anthony Atolagbe, as alleged by advocates of the sponsored statement.
” Let me use this opportunity to appeal to individuals especially those who issue commercial statements for a fee such as” Plateau State Good Governance Watch ” to understand that politics and business should have a limit and we would be better off if this limits are recognized.
” I am sure Nigerians in their current predicament know who to believe and who to look up to,”the statement quoted Dr Golu saying
“We are therefore saddened that such callous statements by a faceless group would be flying in clear contradiction to the desires of the people of north central and Nigeria.
“It was in his determination that so many technologist were deployed and this number of arrest were made during this very short period. This undoubtedly angered the cabal and the pay masters of this on existing group . Hence his, unceremonious redeployment, “it alleged, asking:” How do you redeploy an officer who is at the blink of ending a decade long crises? if there’s no ulterior motives?
This is the same commander that made some impossible arrest in Miango, Bassa local government of plateau and since then there have relative peace in the area.
How do you intermittently interject the fight against herdsmen terrorist attacks by this I’ll timed redeployments? How do you promote the personal agenda of individuals against the over all benefit of the society?”
The security chiefs irrespective of whatever reasons they used for this deployment ought to have been sensitive to the plights of Nigeria’s, especially now that there’s an unjust allegations against the presidency and the Ruling party to be behind the criminals.
We in the Coalition opined that this courageous commander should have been allow to continue the rare and uncommon work he started before this commander assumed duty at OPSH this attackers were branded as unknown Gun men? We strongly think he’s Sin is because he was courageous enough to make this unknown gun men known within a short period .
We further make bold to say that Mr President’s integrity and passion for our country is unequal and he can never have hand in the killing of Nigeria’s, however the sudden deployments of the commander by the Military authority is I’ll timed, suspicious, and Bad PR for the Government.
The presidency must prove her innocence by reversing this anti people’s transfer.
Even as it said it was not holding brief for the redeployed OPSH commander, but as group who are involved in conflict mediation, prevention and mitigation, we kindly appealed to the necessary authorities to reverse the redeployment so as to restore confidence on Mr President’s determination to fight against crime and criminality.
