The Lagos State Police Command has upgraded the Police post in Ikosi , Ketu- Ejirin area of Ikorodu, Lagos, into a standard division with a view to sustaining the fight against kidnapping and other related crimes from surrounding creeks.
At the commissioning of the division yesterday, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, charged the community to partner with the police by intimating them with peculiar security challenges and tips on how address them , as well as information on perpetrators of crimes in the area.
Recall that members of the Badoo cult group as well as kidnappers who operated from the creeks, had been on rampage in the area until their activities were brought under check by the Edgal-led administration.
With the division in place, Edgal said logistics and man power would be increased in order to make it have a full status of a division.
Noting that the upgrade of the division was a clear indication of community policing, Edgal, therefore charged the community to hold the police accountable , in line with his policing philosophy of Community Policing and Safety Partnership.
He said: ” Community engagement involves intelligence -led policing and accountability. We need to win the trust of the people by being accountable to them.
” We are here to ensure that security is heightened around this area which boarders around creeks. Before now, criminality here was something else. But we are here to sustain the tempo and we solicit your support”, he said, even as he commended the Inspector General of Police for giving a nod of approval to upgrade the police post.
In his remark, Oba Asunmo Aderibigbe, of Ayandolu, Ikosi, who described Edgal as a listening and operational officer, said the drastic reduction of crime in the community was an indication of his assertion.
On his part, Vice Chairman of Ikosi/ Ejirin Local Council Development Area, Mr Dare Odulami , also described the upgrade as a remarkable feat, expressing optimism that it would go a long way to addressing the security hitch in the council.
Also speaking at the occasion that witnessed a large turn out of residents of communities under the LCDA, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Epe constituency 2, , Hon. Segun Olulade said, ” We have been clamouring for this opportunity for long. With this in place, residents can now sleep with their two eyes closed, without fear of molestation”.
