INVESTMENTS: Otti tackles Ikpeazu over foreign trips

Otti and Ikpeazu

ABA—GOVERNORSHIP candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in Abia State in the 2015 election, Dr. Alex Otti, has told Governor Okezie Ikpeazu that he doesn’t need to travel from one country to the other to attract foreign investors to the state.

Otti lamented that the governor had since his inauguration been wasting scarce resources travelling from one country to the other seeking foreign investors, stressing that no investor would invest in a state with poor infrastructure.

The APGA chieftain, who spoke through his media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma, in Aba, noted that investors cannot invest in any state without conducting a background check on how such states are being run and the level of infrastructural development to ascertain if they could make profits on their investments.

“Since his inauguration, Governor Ikpeazu has been travelling from one country to the other seeking foreign investors. You don’t need to travel from one country to another to preach to investors to come to Abia. The investors aren’t daft. All they needed to do is to browse about your state and see how you owe workers and the state of your infrastructure, your profile and that alone is enough to tell them what next to do. Governor Ikpeazu has been traveling for over three years, but up till now, no single foreign investor has been brought in.”

On infrastructure, Otti said: “The government is celebrating that they have turned the state around. Then we begin to wonder if they really know the meaning of infrastructure. The government has built few roads which we must admit, but then when you compare some of the roads they have completed or are doing, you’ll begin to see the reality of their failure.

“Look at Faulks Road, the government said that the Faulks Road is 4.6km road and claimed they’re building it at the cost of N6.8b. What that means is that they’re building a kilometer road with almost N1.4b. I have raised the issue of cost of the roads they are talking about. How can they be building a 4.6km road at the cost of 6.8b? And they said we’re ignorant in what they’re doing on the road. They claimed it is a construction masterpiece that they laid pipes at Ife-Obara.

“The question is, at what cost did they lay the pipe? The Ariaria International Market is still flooded at every drop of rain. If you compare this to what Sam Mbakwe did some years back, you will realize how stagnant we have been in Abia. Tell the people how much you’ve gotten and what you did with it in three years. When you put all these together, you’ll see that Governor Ikpeazu has failed.”
