How my only son was murdered — Mother of slain Onitsha businessman

AWKA- THE family of the slain Onitsha trader, Mr. Ndubuisi Nwokolo has narrated how a notorious gang in Onitsha killed the family’s breadwinner, calling on security operatives to bring those responsible for the dastardly act to book.

A notorious killer identified as Ikanda (Ikechukwu Udensi) who hailed from Azia in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State allegedly led members of his gang in pursuit of the late Ndubuisi and clubbed him to death with dangerous weapons.

The notorious leader had since been declared wanted and a ransom of N1 million promised anyone who could provide information on his whereabout.    Other members of his gang that allegedly took part in the gruesome murder of Ndubuisi were also said to be on the run.

The 38-year-old Ndubuisi was murdered at No 21 Etumonye Street, Odoakpu, Onitsha. His death prompted some youths in Onitsha to go on rampage as they demanded that justice be meted to Ikanda and members of his group.

The deceased, who was a native of Umunede, Ika North- East Local Government Area of Delta State, was a Business Management graduate of the University of Calabar and until his death, was a businessman in Onitsha.

Sobbing uncontrollably, mother of the deceased, Mrs. Kate Nwokolo said her son, Ndubuisi, was not only a son of consolation and breadwinner of the family, but was also taking care of his sick father who had been bedridden for the past eight months.

According to Mrs. Nwokolo, the incident that led to the death of her son started when Ndubuisi resisted Ikanda from slapping an elderly man conveying him to his shop on a motorcycle. Following the fight that ensued, Ikanda’s gang rushed to the scene and used dangerous weapons on Ndubuisi, who eventually collapsed.

He was rushed to Boromeo Hospital, Onitsha where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor and the corpse deposited at the mortuary. An autopsy is yet to be performed on the late Ndubuisi.

While crying for justice on the death of her son, Mrs. Nwokolo who lost her only daughter three years ago, said suspected hoodlums whose gang killed her son had been arrested and detained several times in the past, but always managed to get off the hook.

Wife of the deceased and mother of his two little children, Mrs. Cynthia Nneka Nwokolo, who was almost speechless, called on security operatives to bring those who perpetrated this heinous crime to book.

Though there were reports that Ikanga, the notorious killer, had been arrested, the leadership of traders in Onitsha described the information as untrue, calling on the police to ensure that members of the gang were arrested and made to face the law.

The Anambra State Police Command has, however, assured that it would fish out the killers of Ndubuisi and bring them to Justice, even as investigation into the incident was continuing.
