Domestication of cargo handling begins at Terminal C

As Five Star discharges rail lines with locally fabricated equipment Nigeria’s maritime industry has recorded a new feat with a successful deployment of the first locally fabricated heavy duty multi-purpose discharge crane at Terminal C of the Tin-can Island port.

The project, executed by Five Star Logistics Limited, managers of Terminal C has already used the equipment to discharge three shipments of rail lines totalling 14,434.

The length and weight of each of the lines measures 25 meters and 1.5 tons respectively.

General Manager, Five Star Logistics Limited, Wolfgang Schneider, told Vanguard Maritime Report that they had to resort to the locally fabricated equipment when the imported one failed.

He stated: “We have handled so far for CCECC and their Lagos / Ibadan railway project the following three rail-shipments:4,270 rails weighing about 6,400 metric tons; 5,964 rails lines weighing about 8,946 metric tons and 4,200 rails lines weighing about 6,300 metric tons.

“Between the first shipment and now, a total of 14,434 rails lines of 25 meter long each and weighing 1.5 metric tons, have been discharged bringing total weight of the three shipments so far handled to 21,651 metric tons.

“We are expecting another shipment of about 5,000 rail lines in the next couple of days and thereafter further shipments to complete the project,” he noted.
