Controversy had trailed the Anambra State government’s renaming of the former Abakaliki Street to Club road, which attracted unfavourable comments from some officials of Ebonyi State government, who argued that it was done in bad faith.

In fact, the Ebonyi State House of Assembly had, in the heat of the controversy, passed a resolution and gave the Anambra State government seven days to rescind the decision in the interest of the mutual relationship between the two states.

Apparently to douse the tension generated by the issue, the state government approved the renaming of a major street which starts from Awka –Onitsha expressway as Abakaliki Street.

Messrs Ogbaga Nshi, Ignatius Eke and Gbagunsi Nwudah, who spoke for the Ebonyi indigenes, said the people of Ebonyi in Anambra State were happy, describing Governor Obiano as someone who had a listening ear.

They said: “The new Abakaliki Street is very good, especially as it is linked with the expressway and has many landmark buildings, including churches and big hotels. The new street is even better than the former street, which is associated with immoral acts.”
