Asaba 2018 AAC: Okon-George targets two titles for Nigeria

Nigeria’s foremost quarter-miler, Patience Okon-George said her aim is to win the women 400m and 4x400m titles at the the African Athletics Championships holding August 1-5 in Asaba, Delta State.

Okon-George warmed up with with a 51.49 seconds run in Wednesday’s Africa Tour meet at the Stephen Keshi Stadium venue of the AAC. She disclosed that she is determined to do better than she did at the last edition in Durban, South Africa where she settled for bronze in the flat and silver in the 4x400m.

“I’m training hard to do my best and hopefully my best will be good enough to win the two titles,” said the athlete.

“It has not been easy preparing. But that not withstanding, I have to close my eyes to all the drama in Nigeria athletics and get a good result.”

Okon-George with a season’s best of 51.40 may be facing the likes of Kabange Mupopo of Zambia, Margaret Wambui of Kenya. There is also Christine Botlogetswe and come backing Amantle Monstho both of Botswana in the reckoning, not forget South Africa’s Caster Semenya who is the leading African woman in the event so far with 50.48 seconds.

Nigerian athletes it was gathered will report in Asaba on Sunday for a week intensive training ahead of the Championships.
