UYO—Communi-ties in Effiat in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, hosting oil and gas facilities, have accused multinational oil companies operating in the area of unfair practices, especially in the area of provision of social amenities, contract award and employment.
The communities alleged that the seven oil firms have refused to implement the local content policy of the Federal Government, while making multi-billion naira proceeds from the hydrocarbon sourced from their land.
The Village Head of Akwa Obio Effiat, Chief Inyang Effiong Etim, stated this at a briefing in Uyo, the state capital.
His words: “We are indeed suffering and there is nothing to show for the 19 years multinational oil companies have operated in our communities.
“The Efiat clan has no primary school, no health centre and no road.”
He said tension is beginning to rise over the divide-and-rule policies of the oil firms, urging the state government to step into the matter before it gets out of hand.
The monarch, who was flanked by other members of the Traditional Rulers Council, TRC, Effiat Clan, appealed to Governor Udom Emmanuel to prevail on the Clan Head, HRH, Obuong Asukwo Okon Okpo IV, to return to his palace to avert further crisis.
