The calamity of the blind

By Pastor William F. Kumuyi

Mark 10:46 “And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.”

The programme of Jesus for Jericho was at an end; yet, His knack for trans-forming lives that had been marred by the evil stroke of the devil was palpable as ever. This eventful journey of His was not to be repeated in history, and blind Bartimaeus, as if had been informed of the develop-ment, took an unpopular decision with a gasp aiming towards freedom.

He was ridiculed and regarded with contempt because of his impairment; but blindness did not dim his vision for sight.

Mark 10:47-48 “And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.”

Mark 10:49-50 “And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.”

Just as Jesus called for blind Bartimaeus and he responded promptly; likewise, He is calling you by your first name and He wants you to answer the call today. He is calling you so that you will receive salvation from sin. The moment you accord Jesus respect, with the right reply, you will experience sweeping relief.

Blind Bartimaeus, without any iota of doubt, knew that Jesus was his best bet to a better life. That is why, immediately he heard that he was being called by Jesus, he cast away the filthy useless garment plaguing his rejuvenation.

Mark 10:51-52 “And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.”

The instant you come to Jesus you will become whole. What does that mean? It means that you will no longer be a fraction! He was blind, therefore, he was not whole, but a fraction. If the fraction of a man and or a woman comes to Jesus, he or she will become whole and will no more become a fraction.

As a blind man, Bartimaeus knew that things were not alright with him because he was limited, confined and restricted in life. He was powerless because he was blind to the beautiful things of life he craved to appre-ciate: darkness became his daily companion, which lead to desperation and this pitiable unpleasant experience became his worse nightmare.

In fact, the Bible says that we are all ‘blind’ and as a re-sult, we are to be pitied. In other words, when you can-not see and take advantage of the good things of life meant for you, are you not blind? When you cannot see the pit that has been dug for you by your enemy and you are about to fall into it, are you not blind? When you do not see the beauty of salvation, are you not blind? When you do not see the beauty of the garment of righteousness and the splendour of heaven, are you not blind?

Religion has a way of blinding the eyes of men from insight into the mind of God for them. John 9:40-41 “And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin re-maineth.”

The Pharisees who pride themselves in the game of religion were so carried away by the rituals and rites of the ten commandments that they did not know that they have become blind to the gospel of salvation.

II Corinthians 4:3-4 “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” But, I see people who are willing to break free from blindness. Today, you will take concrete steps to open your spiritual eye and obtain the freedom you long for in life.

Look at you. You are one of those committed church-goers, but you are blind from the truth and you cannot see Jesus who has the power to save you from the bondage of sin. You read the Bible too, but you are still blind from the gospel message that brings salvation. You have heard many messages of salvation all your life, but because you have been blinded by religion, you fail to see reasons why you should under-stand the grace of God that inspires forgiveness for sin. You have even read the famous John 3:16, the comp-lete gospel package which says that, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
