Lawyers’ group frowns on crowning of monarch

By Iruoma Kelechi

THE League of Patriotic Lawyers has frowned on the crowning of Prince Abdullateef Momodu as the king of Agbede in Edo State, describing it as contemptuous of extant rules.

Briefing newsmen yesterday in Lagos, the group’s Director of Information, Mr. Dania Momodu commended the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for refusing to be part of the exercise.

His words: ‘’ It is doubtful whether Prince Abdullateef Momodu would be presented by the Momodu ruling house. The eldest brother, Freedom Momodu in America has declined to participate in the illegal crowning process. The ruling houses of Omoaka and Emokpare were excluded. Indeed, the Afe Atevbeda has not presented anybody for the vacant stool, which still remains vacant.

“The law being relied upon by Prince Momodu, was made during the military era. He wants to use it to change the laws of Aviele Clan.

We extol the virtues of the governor, Godwin Obaseki and the Commissioner for Local Government for refusing to be part of the illegal exercise.

“We are calling on all traditional rulers to avoid and indeed treat Prince Momodu as a pariah till the determination of the pending suit in Auchi High Court. The league  urges the plaintiff’s lawyer, R. O. Isenalumhe to proceed against  Prince Momodu and his supporters by initiating form 48/49, for committal proceeding.’’
