…Heads roll as moves to impeach Deputy Gov heighten
By Emeka Mamah
THE secretariat of the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, along Works Layout by Okigwe Road in Imo State was yesterday set on fire by unknown persons.
The secretariat was torched against the backdrop of the on-going crises in the party over the outcome of last week’s controversial APC War Congresses in the state. Thick smoke from the building was noticed at about 6.15 pm and efforts were still being made to put out the inferno as at the time of this report at about 6.40 pm.
Before the fire incident, the Chairman of APC Caucus in the state House of Assembly, Hon Lawman Duruji, had addressed newsmen where he distanced himself and some other members of the Assembly from the unilateral announcement by the Speaker, Hon Acho Ibim, removing Hon Uche Ogwuwuike as Majority Leader of the house.
This was even as the state government has so far sacked four of its officials in connection with last Saturday’s ward congresses of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which saw the camp of the Deputy Governor, Price Eze Madumere, outsmarting Governor Rochas Okorocha’s in the rancorous exercise.
Sources told Saturday Vanguard that those so far sacked for allegedly working with Madumere’s camp include the Commissioner for Sports, Martins Ohiri, the Transitional Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Steve Odoemenam, the Vice Chairman of the local government, Mrs. Gladys Ukaegbu as well as the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon Christopher Chinagorom.
Also, Ichie Best Mbanaso, who served as a two-time commissioner in the ministries of Works and Commerce and Industry before he was appointed Special Adviser on Market Development, was relieved of his position before last Thursday’s unilateral removal of the Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Hon Ugwuwike by the Speaker, Hon Acho Ihim, while ruling on a motion for adjournment in the house.
Ihim was said to have announced the removal of Oguwike, an in-law to Madumere and replaced him with Hon Lugard Osuji(APC Owerri Municipal) who is believed to be in the forefront of the impeachment move against Madumere, thus sparking trouble in the House. It was learned that Oguwuike maintained close relationship with the deputy governor and his stay in the position would almost make it impossible for Madumere to me impeached.
Yesterday’s burning of the state secretariat of the party sources said was carried out to ensure that the Local government congress of the party throughout the country did not hold in Imo State today.
