BENIN— Rainbow Caucus, a socio-political group in Edo State, has challenged the state House of Assembly and others asking for the head of the senator representing Edo South Senatorial zone in the National Assembly, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, to carry out their threat to recall the senator for moving a motion calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to explain the spending of $460 million on the purchase of aircraft from the United States without approval from the National  Assembly.

Spokesman for the group, Mr. Okharedia Ihimekpen, while addressing journalists shortly after  its emergency meeting in Benin City, Edo State, yesterday, said that the plan by the Edo State House of Assembly and All Progressives Congress, APC, hoodlums to commence a recall process of Senator Urhoghide for moving the motion was laughable and advised them to learn  from the failure of the Kogi State Government’s attempt to recall Senator Dino Melaye which ended in his triumph.

He said: “We joined the furry of condemnation over the embarrassment metted on Senator Urhoghide at the Benin Airport last week. We called on Governor Godwin Obaseki to explain to Nigerians the role he played in the drama as it could not be a coincidence that he was  at the scene exchanging greetings with the hoodlums.

“We praise the courage, vision and boldness of Senator Urhoghide over the motion he moved on the floor of the Senate that President Buhari should account for the $460 million  he spent without following due process.

“We condemn in very strong terms the shameful act by sponsored challatans and thugs in embarrassing the distinguished senator who has proved to be worthy and patriotic especially in these hard times when men of honour and courage are rare commodities.”

The group called on the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Ethics to investigate the motion referred to them and advised the Senate to take approximate action, saying that Nigerians were anxiously waiting for their recommendations.

The group said Sen Urhoghide has written his name in gold and path of honour just as late Chief Anthony Enahoro did in 1953 when he moved the historical motion of Nigeria’s independence in 1957.
