Borehole project attracted by lawmaker collapses in Aba

ABA- A solar powered borehole project attracted by the member representing Aba North/Aba South federal constituency, in the House of Representatives, Mr. Ossy Prestige, has collapsed, in Aba, Abia State, destroying its overhead tank and perimeter fencing.

It was gathered that the contract was one of the constituency projects of the lawmaker awarded by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, through the Anambra/Imo River Basin Development Authority.

A cross section of residents of the area in an interview with Vanguard, alleged that the project located at Ogbor Hill primary school, Aba, collapsed due to alleged substandard materials used in constructing the facility.

Though no life was lost in the incident, residents of the area were said to have avoided the facility as it showed signs of collapse with some metals of the overhead tank hanging loosely. They called for strict supervision of projects to check use of substandard materials by contractors who may choose to cut corners.

When Vanguard visited the area, there was no information on how to get the name of the contractor handling the project or his contacts.

A resident of Ovom Street, who gave his name as Uche Michael, said, “We thank God that no life was lost in the incident. Since the project was commissioned, we knew it was a disaster waiting to happen because some parts of the overhead tank were hanging loosely. There is no doubt that the project collapsed due to inferior materials used in constructing it. We knew it would collapse and warned people to be cautious while passing through the area. It is unacceptable that a project of this nature was built with inferior materials. It means that nobody supervised the contractor. This is shocking.”

Reacting to the incident, Chairman of Aba North council area, Prince Ogbonna decried the use of inferior materials to handle public projects and urged politicians not to put the lives of the people at risk by executing poorly planned projects.

Efforts to get Hon. Ossy Prestige’s reaction on the incident were unsuccessful. However, his media aide, Henry Nna, said “We know about it. The project is still under construction and the contractor is coming to check it today.”
