Buhari berates varsities over non accountability of funds

President Muhammadu Buhari has taken a swipe at Nigerian universities over what he perceives as their non accountability of funds.

He expressed his displeasure Friday over the issue while delivering a speech as visitor to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on the final day of the institution’s 49th convocation.

According to him, the universities are not making justifiable use of funds being released to them by the Federal government. The situation, he noted has always inhibited the Ivory Towers from accessing more funds for various developmental uses.

While still assuring the universities of his administration’s readiness to continually make funds available for researchers and other academic endeavors, he insisted that the universities must always make optimum utility of all funds released to them.

Delivering his speech through the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Adamu Rasheed, Buhari reiterated his government’s commitment to making policies that will take the nation’s education quality to global heights.

Meanwhile, 5,830 higher degrees of various categories from Masters to Ph.D were awarded to deserving graduates across different disciplines.

Among dignitaries that grace the occasion were the Chancellor of the institutionalized, His Royal Eminence, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Gabai El- Kanemi, the Sheu of Borno, Ooni of Ile Ife, His Royal Majesty, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury; Executive Secretary, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede and a host of others.
