Count down to the 2018 African Athletics Championships is up and running. And the Local Organising Committee chairman, Solomon Ogba has disclosed that pressure was mounting to deliver a world class event come August in Asaba, Delta State.
Ogba who was speaking before jetting out to Gold Coast, Australia to monitor organisational proceedings and do likewise at Asaba 2018, said the LOC was considering some new innovations in its bid to usher in a problem free championships.
“We are under pressure to present one of the best championships ever organised in Africa. This is why we are doing everything we can to ensure nothing is left out.
‘For instance we are going to have an electronic score board. We have been talking to the score board makers to give us the best. We want to transmit live pictures and we are close to getting it installed. There is also going to be electronic pitch panels.” Ogba added that hotel and bed spaces for athletes and officials have been secured, while transportation has also been arranged with 15 Marcopolo buses and smaller units penciled down.
Apart from presenting an experiential championships, Ogba said the committee was also working on ways of paying winning prizes to the athletes. If this is achieved, it will be the first time athletes will earn prize monies in the African Championships.
