The atmosphere was calm and cozy, the ambience very inviting, the space quite suitable for such night thrill. Miliki Lounge, Victoria Island, where the Soul conversation with the Genie took place, was chosen because the ambience evokes feelings of love music, love life rhythmic experience that befits the purpose.
Soul conversation with the Genie, held two Sundays ago, was exclusively for the lovers of well-crafted quality music in its original format – Jazz, Soul, R/B, Afro beat – and for those who still crave for originality devoid of empty, meaningless lyrics and distorting rhythms. It is also a platform for the propagation of the soul music fraternity of Nigeria shifting from meaningless lyrics to meaningful lyrics with sense of purpose.
Lovers of good music trooped in to be part of the exclusive audience who not only relived memories but also consented to the truth that the joy Soul, Rhythm & Blues music brings cannot be equalled. The show started with the Okri twins, a new discovery from the famous Mike Okri of Omoge fame. It was followed by a performer in spoken words, Torpedo Mascaw. A sensational high pitch singer, Omotayo, followed suit with a soul rendition of his songs and that of Maxwell. Maka stepped on stage afterwards with a bang of jazzy and Afro jazz soul songs, a wonderful singer that combines various Nigerian languages in one song. Isaac Gerald did justice to Jazzy saxophone tunes while Asikey George sealed it with soulful tunes to wrap up the night. Meanwhile, DJ Link, all the way from London, UK, was on ground to supply the supporting vibes.
The Genie, speaking with Vanguard’s Art & Review said, “The first show was August last year. It was something I thought about for quite a while and you know, there are some of us who like to go to certain shows to relax and hear the music that speaks to our souls, and I thought about it and said I have to do it. I decided to do the first one which I put together in five days. And I had about 120 people turn up. I was surprised. It was for free. I did the second one after learning from some of the mistakes of the first and improved with 160 people turning up. The amazing thing was this: of the 160 people that came to the second one, none came for the first one. I said okay, let’s do it again. I decided to push the third one to 2018. And now this is the 3rd one and I am happily impressed with the turnout here today.
“For this show, it is a long one coming. I think I have paid my dues in the industry. I have always been in the background, and I think it is high time I saw myself in the forefront and let people know that I can do good stuff and many other things to come. The soul conversation is also about helping people who are new or just up and coming in the industry; to help them showcase their talents on this platform and get those who are already established to support them. That’s the essence of this platform. If you want something intelligent, something real nice, then come for Soul conversation,” Genie says.
