MAIDUGURI—Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has threatened to invoke the wrath of the law against any journalists and mischief-makers in the opposition parties he alleged are peddling libelous materials against his government.
His reaction came against the backdrop of reports that the governor said military commanders from the South did better that their counterparts from the North in the fight against Boko Haram.
Governor Shettima made the threat while signing the state’s N181.2 billion Appropriation Bill into law, yesterday.
He said as much as he appreciated collective efforts in the ongoing fight and defeat of insurgents, some media outfits quoted him out of context.
He lamented that others also blew out of proportion the encomiums he poured on the current Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Rogers Nicholas, who is an Igbo from Imo State.
Shettima said: “I am shocked to read in some media outfit that I only recognised the gallant efforts of our Christian Army Generals and officers, without their Muslim counterparts.
“I am now compelled to say that I have directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kaka Lawal, to sue any journalist or media organisation that publishes libelous statement against my government.
“It is very unfortunate if anyone will come out through mischief and concoct stories that this government does not appreciate the gallant efforts of both our Muslim and Christian military officers.”
