By Harris-Okon Emmanuel

UYO—Akwa Ibom State Government has given reasons why it was awarding contracts for roads and other physical infrastructure to local contractors in the state,

State Commissioner for Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-Eyen, in Uyo, said local contractors have the technical know-how and relevant equipment to handle even complex construction and engineering works, saying that the jobs they have since completed were up to standard and met global best practices.

He said government insistence on quality delivery was to ensure prudent management of scarce resources and  commended the local contractors for always being timely and in the execution of contracts awarded to them.

Inyang-Eyen lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for impacting positively on the infrastructural development of the state, noting that the state was becoming a huge construction site as there was no local government area that is neglected in the infrastructure renaissance of the current administration.

‘’We find  out that the local contractors have often met the specification and use quality materials in the execution of their works and the roads are of high quality. If a government with a minimal resources because of the drop in oil price, could all of these, I think it deserves kudos.

“Local contractors go out of their way to meet deadline, but foreign contractors will not do work until you pay them fully. But the local contractors source fund and complete projects before we even pay them and their works are done to global standard and best practices,” he said.

According to him,  the local contractors can compete favourably with their foreign counterparts with the quality of works they have executed, commending them for dedication and readiness to work with the state government for the rapid development of the state.

He disclosed that about 12 columns had been added to the bridge on Enwang-Etebi Road, noting that when completed, the road will  fire up the socio-economic developments of the two local government areas.
