Nigeria hosts African Fencing championship

From March 1 through 5, Nigeria will play host to the 2018 Junior and Cadet African Fencing Championship at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Speaking at a press conference at the Nigeria Olympic Committee secretariat at the National Stadium Lagos Wednesday, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel said no fewer than 200 athletes from 31 African countries will take part in the continental showpiece.

Samuel disclosed further that Nigeria will be represented by 12 athletes will fly Nigeria’s flag at the event. “We will be represented by 12 athletes and out of that number, five are based abroad,” the President said.

While disclosing that the Nigeria Olympic Committee has pledged support for the games, he also called for support from corporate Nigeria and other agencies.

“About 20 officials will be coming, we need plenty of funds for their feeding, hotel accommodation and other logistics. That is why we are calling on well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to come to our aid as we look forward to hosting the best African championship ever.”

He assured that the Nigerian contingent for the championship is ready and yearning for action. “We are ready and we hope to grab at least four gold medals,” Samuel assured.
