By Emeka Mamah

Enugu—One person died, while three other members of his  family are lying critically ill in hospital after eating cassava meal at Igogoro, Enugu Ezike, in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, weekend.

The incident reportedly occurred at Umuaba area when one Mr. Clement Urama, who ate the cassava meal with three of his children, began to feel uneasy shortly after dinner on Saturday night.

It was gathered that as effort was being made to rush him to hospital, three of his children also started feeling dizzy, prompting neighbours to rush all of them to the nearby Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Annex, Ogrute.

At the intensive care unit of the hospital, the patients were administered with blood infusions, as their blood levels were said to have gone down considerably.

However, the father, Clement, was said to have died after some hours in hospital, while his three children were referred to another hospital in Enugu, where doctors are still battling to save their lives.

A relation of Clement, Francis, who confirmed the story, said the deceased had four children, but that his wife and the fourth child did not eat the cassava meal because they were not home  when the meal was prepared.

According to Francis, “the wife went to sympathise with somebody, who was bereaved, when her children prepared the meal.

“We are lucky because all the six members of the family did not eat the cassava. It would have been something else.”
