Why I’m supporting Buhari — El-Rufai

Ben Agande, Kaduna.

The governor of Kadu-na state, Mallam Nasir El Rufai has said that his decision to support the re- election of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term was not because he wanted to feather his political nest but because Buhari remained the best candidate at the moment.

In an exclusive interview with Weekend Vanguard in Kaduna, governor El Rufai said majority of Nigerians were ready to re-elect him, adding that those who were opposed to President Buhari’s second term bid were either afraid of his anti corruption fight or saw him as a stumbling block  to the realization of their own political ambitions.

Mallam El Rufai’s position was conveyed by his spokesman, Samuel Aruwan.

According to him, Nigerians generally are satisfied with the performance of the president and would give him their votes overwhelmingly when he seeks re-election in 2019.

“I do not think it is right to say people are dissatisfied with Buhari. You can categorize people that are dissatisfied with Buhari into three or four categories: those in opposition, those who believe the president should not play their game, those who are corrupt and others who feel that Buhari is a stumbling block to the realization of their presidential ambition.

“In 2010, El Rufai left Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC and when he joined CPC, his ambition was to support Buhari. He believed that Buhari had all that it took to move Nigeria forward. He believes in Buhari and as far as we are concerned, for now, Buhari remains the best candidate. It is not a cause we are pursuing to realize our ambition. It is about our confidence in Buhari.

“Before Buhari lost the presidential election in 2011, he made it clear that that was likely going to be the last election that he would contest. It was El Rufai and others that mounted pressure on  Buhari to reconsider his position. Buhari himself confirmed this publicly and he also said that he was the one that asked El Rufai to contest for the governorship election in 2015. “El Rufai’s  support has nothing to do with his personal interest. He feels that Buhari is the best bet for now” he said.

Asked what Buhari could say were his achievements upon which he would anchor his 2019 campaign he said the president has tackled the security challenges in the country and has frontally tackled the issue of corruption. “Look at the issue of security. Everybody knows what the security situation was in the country before Buhari came on board. We have made tremendous success in the fight against terrorism and other insecurity challenges.

“Then when you look at the anti corruption fight, despite the fact that a lot of people criticize the anti corruption fight, you cannot take away the fact that this government under the leadership of Buhari has done well. These are things that Nigerians are very proud and happy about” he said.

On the letter from OBJ and IBB, said both the government and the APC hav replied to that and the responses from the two were sufficient
