CALABAR—A 46-year-old man, simply identified as Ubong, has died after consuming Ogogoro in Calabar, Cross River State capital.

Vanguard learned that the incident occurred, weekend, on Punch Street, off Victor-Akan in Calabar South Local Government Area, when the deceased could not wake up allegedly due to the ethanol he consumed the previous night.

An eyewitness, Chigozie Friday who spoke with Vanguard, claimed the deceased collected six months rent from his tenants and decided to go on a drinking binge, but never woke up the next day.

He said: “He has a three-room apartment, which he inherited as his share from their father’s estate. But decided to give them all out for rent.

“He just collected the rent on one of them for six months and decided to drink.

“He drank to stupor as usual because you always saw him sleeping either in front of the lock-up shops near us or the gutter.

“We thought he was just sleeping as usual. But when we went close to him, we discovered that he was no longer breathing because he was not moving.

“The incident even caused panic among shop owners. We sell motor parts and as an extension of Bedwell Street (motor spare parts line), we locked up our shops and ran away for fear of arrest and molestation by the Police.

“Later, his family members came and removed his corpse because they did not want his corpse to be taken away by Calabar Urban Development Agency, CUDA.

“A lot of people knew the deceased as a drunkard, but many of us did not know that he had a three-room apartment and was from a well-to-do family.”
