Chairman, Big Church Group and African Youth Leader, Dr. Olakunle Churchill has advocated for active youth participation in governance and politics as the 2019 general election approaches.

He made this call during an interview session with a local TV station recently, stressing the need for the youths in the country to wake up and take positions while admonishing the incumbents to show sincerity in governance.

The popular philanthropist and ambassador of African youths reiterated and questioned the preparedness of the youths to take up the challenges of leadership through politics.

According to him, “I am making a clarion call for active youths participation in governance and politics in this country. Politics needs to be brought down to a level in which the youths have a franchise. The young people of today understand their scope in the world. The older generations are primarily aware of their community and larger scope of politics, possibly through distant news, while the current youthful generation has statistics, political viewpoints, and exhaustive analysis at their fingertips.”

Dr. Olakunle argued that the youths of today have the perspective of the world, and also have an opportunity to apply that viewpoint on any level to which they aspire.

“It would be good to see young people become involved in the nation’s politics. Any election or vote where they count for a significant percentage will encourage them to see actual results from their suffrage. Youth involvement in politics and governance in Nigeria will bring about sensitization for their readiness to take charge of affairs of their future.  Since I was a boy in primary school, I have always heard it that youths are the leaders of tomorrow, but I am saying that tomorrow is now” Dr. Olakunle added.

He also stressed need for the youths to begin to see the value and benefits of shared beliefs, saying that they can interact and engage each other at a more refined level, forming political structures or interest groups than dwelling on merely two parties.

“It is my dream and determination to be in the path of reformative agenda and for our voices to be heard for a new progressive generation.” Dr. Olakunle concludes.

It would be recalled that Dr. Churchill Olakunle was bestowed with the prestigious honour of “African Youth Champion” in Abeokuta last year by African Youth and Governance Conference (AYGC), a platform which attracted young leaders and enterprising entrepreneurs across Africa and diaspora. He has for some time now, championed the cause of youth development and empowerment through his foundation and talk shows.
