Mercenaries lay siege to Delta communities over proposed modular refinery

By Emma Amaize
ASABA – THE dispute among Umuseti, Emu Iyasele and Ebendo communities in Delta State over the ownership of the site of a proposed Modular Refinery by Pillar Oil Company has escalated with unknown gunmen laying ambush and shooting residents of opposing communities.

A police source, who hinted that the Commissioner of Police had summoned leaders and stakeholders of the communities to a meeting at Asaba, indicated: “The renewed violent attacks may not be unconnected with the planned citing of a modular refinery by Pillar Oil Company on a stretch of land being disputed between Umuseti and Emu Iyasele/Ebendo communities.”

Vanguard learned that armed men shot a 40-year-old man, Albert Ndenwenego, an indigene of Umuseti-Kwale on the stomach, while he was returning from his farm and escaped, December, last year.
