Colombia rebels call for talks after government suspends peace deal

Colombia’s ELN rebels called on the government of President Juan Manuel Santos on Wednesday to reconsider its withdrawal from peace negotiations, insisting they wanted to talks to continue.

Santos announced earlier that he was withdrawing the government delegation from the talks in neighboring Ecuador because fresh rebel attacks followed the end of a 101-day ceasefire at midnight.

“We want conversations to be maintained, and that no incidents lead to them being interrupted, and we call on them to reconsider their withdrawal from the table,” rebel commander Pablo Beltran said.
