Arsenal strong without Aubameyang – Wenger

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal are “strong enough” even if they don’t manage to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month, and declined to give an update on how negotiations with Borussia Dortmund are going.

Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are in talks with Dortmund about the striker, but wouldn’t be drawn on how they are going after Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semifinals.

“The best is I don’t talk about that. Because it wouldn’t help. If something happens, it happens. If it doesn’t happen we are strong enough to focus on the players we have,” Wenger said.

“I’m perfectly happy with the players I have. We’ve got [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan in and we have a strong squad.”

Mkhitaryan, who was on the sidelines for Arsenal’s win on Wednesday, signed for the club on Monday in a deal that saw Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United after a drawn-out transfer saga.

Arsenal have been widely linked with a move for West Brom centre-back Jonny Evans as well, but Wenger deflected questions about the defender as well.

“Look, if we sign somebody we’ll tell you very quickly. But at the moment we’re open to strengthen the team and the squad, but we are not close to signing anybody,” he said.
