By Julius Oweh

Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has charged Nigerians to make Christ the reason for their yuletide celebration. Speaking in Asaba at the 2017 Delta State Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols held on Monday, Governor Okowa said that Christians should use the opportunity of the yuletide season to rededicate themselves to Christ rather than for selfish material desires.

The ceremony, which was attended by a cross section of Deltans including Dame Edith Okowa, First Lady of the state, the Deputy Governor, Barr Kingsley Otuaro, and his wife, Engr.[Mrs] Ebiere Otuaro, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the chairman of the state Traditional Council and Obi Of Owa, Obi Efeizomor II, saw some notable Deltans take various readings.

“I am glad that we are having this open air Festival Of Nine Lessons and Carols, many Nigerians at Christmas are often carried away by a lot of things and hardly have time for Christ, who is the reason for the season, we need to ask ourselves “have we prepared a room for Jesus in our heart this season” he said.

“We tend to spend our time to make our children believe that buying new clothes is more important than Jesus Christ who is the reason for the season, we need to lead our children aright on the road to Christ, we need to rededicate ourselves to Christ and create a room for him in our heart”, the governor added.

Senator Okowa, who commended the organiser for the festival, promised that the 2018 edition would be bigger and would be held in Asaba Township stadium.

Chairman of the Steering Committee for the ceremony and Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, in a welcome address, said that the 2017 Delta State Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols was meant to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and remind Christians of the reason for the season, stressing that this year’s edition was the first to held in an open air arena.
