ALL Progressives Congress, APC, has called for the cancellation of the Local government election in Akwa Ibom State just as the Akwa Ibom Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC, yesterday declared candidates of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, winners of all the 31 chairmanship and 329 councillorship positions in last Saturday’s local government election in the state.

APC, in a statement by its Chairman, Dr Amadu Atai, and the state Secretary, Dr Effiong Etuk, said the poll was not free and credible and called for its cancellation.

While describing the entire exercise as a sham the APC stated: “There are proven cases of electoral Irregularities and voters’ apathy that marred the entire process, as most of the local governments and polling units witnessed non availability of electoral materials or late arrival of voting materials and low turnout of voters.’’

However, the Chairman of AKISIEC, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, announced that the PDP won all 360 positions contested for in the 31 local government areas of the state, adding that the election was conducted  in line with the relevant laws. “The said election was contested by 12 political parties and the People’s Democratic Party won the 31 Chairmanship and 329 Councillorship seats respectively,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Governor Udom Emmanuel, yesterday congratulated winners of the poll.

He said: “ By this act, we have again proved to the world that elections can be conducted under peaceful atmosphere.”
