Court security men, tricycle rider accused of stealing N1.5m law reports

Lagos — Two security guards of Igbosere Magistrate’s Court and a Tricycle rider, were yesterday arraigned before the court for allegedly stealing 103 copies of Law reports valued N1.5million, the property of Lagos State Judiciary.
The defendants are Lateef Bello, 53, Oyedokun Afeez, 27 and Tajudeen Igbekoya, 34.
They were charged with a three count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, aiding and abetting preferred against them by the Police.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Cyrciacus Osuji, told the court that the trio committed the alleged offences on October 20, 2017, at about 6: 20 am, at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court.
He said that Bello, who was on morning duty at the time, conspired with Afeez his colleague and Igbekoya, the Tricycle rider and led them into the court premises, with the intention to steal 103 copies of law reports valued N1,545,000, from the court, property of Lagos state judiciary.
Osuji said, “The defendants had loaded the tricycle with bags of the legal records and were leaving before some other security guards became aware of the situation and alerted the police immediately which led to their arrest.”
According to him, the offences committed are punishable under section 411,287(7) and 410 of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr. Martins Owumi, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.
He said that the surety must be gainfully employed, must show evidence of tax payment to Lagos state government and have their addresses verified.
The case was adjourned to December 11, for trial.
