10 years after, Kogi celebrates Sunday Awoniyi

LOKOJA—Encomiums, yesterday, were showered on the late former Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Chief Sunday Awoniyi, during a special memorial service held at the First Baptist Church, Mopa, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his passing.

Former governor of Kogi State, Ibrahim Idris, described late Awoniyi as a great man and a role model who was transparent, forthright and ensured fairness and justice in all his dealings.

Idris said: “The late Awoniyi was one of the personalities that supported my political ambition of becoming a governor. The state lost a rare gem in the late Awoniyi.”

Senator Tunde Ogbeha, on his part, described late Awoniyi as a devoted patriot, who demonstrated a lot of passion for the development of northern Nigeria.

ACF, in its goodwill letter read by its representative, J. P. Uba, described the late Awoniyi as a man who devoted his service and retirement life to the overall development of the North, adding that the forum will continue to remember him as one of its founding fathers.

The Deputy Chief of Staff to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Chief Sola Akonmode, said the late Awoniyi remained an inspiration, even in death.

In her remarks, widow of the late Awoniyi, Florence, thanked the dignitaries for the love and honour done her husband, even in death.

Earlier in his sermon, Rev David Daniyan said late Awoniyi lived a life worthy of celebration, adding that he contributed greatly to the development of the church in Mopa.

Others at the event included former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Patrick Adaba; member representing Yagba federal constituency, Sunday Karimi; member representing Ijumu/Kabba-Bunu, Tajudeen Yusuf, and a former Special Adviser to ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Mr. Tunde Olusunle, among others.
