Mr John Eze, Chairman, Transition Caretaker Committee, Enugu North Local Government Area, on Wednesday consoled those affected by the fire which razed the grind-milling section of the Ogbete Main Market, Enugu.
Eze, who is also the Caretaker Chairman of the Ogbete Main Market Traders Association, gave the consolation in Enugu and described the incident which occurred on Tuesday as shocking.
“The council will communicate to the State Government for assistance for the affected traders,’’ he said.
Newsmen recall that no fewer than 35 shops, gigantic milling machines and grains valued at millions of naira were destroyed by the fire.
The Chairmen, Corn Millers Association and Corn Dealers Associations Ogete Main Market, Messrs Austin Ogbonna and Friday Egbueli respective, said the incident had adversely the affected members.
They regretted that the incident happened now the members were experiencing economic hardship.
One of the affected traders, Mr Joseph Chukwuemeka, however, commended the Enugu State Fire Service, for the prompt response to their emergency call.
Chukwuemeka appealed to local and state governments to come to their aid.
Meanwhile, an official of the service, Mr Ambrose Okwor has said that no life was lost in the incident.
Okwor said that the cause of fire which started at about 3 p.m. could not be immediately ascertained.
He, however, advised Enugu residents to exercise caution while handling fire, especially this dry season.
