OML 34 workers demand Buhari’s intervention in engagement status

ASABA—OIL Mining Lease 34 Host Staff Welfare Forum has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the management of Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, NPDC/ND Western Nigeria Limited to engage its members as permanent staff of the company.

President Buhari

The forum, in a letter to the President, listed their demands to include prompt payment of their salaries, decasualisation and engagement as permanent staff, issuance of appointment letters with improved condition of service, provisions of personal protective equipment and prioritisation of their medical care.

The letter, signed by the forum’s Chairman, Mr. Paul Oghomor and Secretary, Mr. Kingsley Umukotete, read: “The company presently has a manpower strength of over 290 workers, out of which only 66 were employed from the seven communities that play host to the asset and they are casualized despite having worked with the company for over six years since the former operator, SPDC divested its interests into the asset to NPDC/ND Western.

“We have also discovered that some persons within the management of the company have vowed to frustrate all our efforts towards our decasualisation and staffing,   despite having put in so many years of service.

“The attempt at frustrating our effort is particularly more evident when the issue was brought to the notice of the Delta State Government who twice convened   tripartite meetings involving Delta State Government, NPDC/ND Western management and representatives of the workers some on September 6 and 20, 2017, where the management of the company asked the state Government and workers to give it 18 working days to address and remedy the grievance of the aggrieved workers.

“At the expiration of the 18 days, we contacted the representatives of the state government in the various meetings, we were informed that the management of the company is no longer taking calls put across to their phones neither do they respond to letters written to them by Delta State Government.”

“You excellency if this people could disrespect and disregard Delta State Government in an attempt to amicably resolve the impasse between the company and the workers, how do we now get justice in the present circumstances.

“It is against   the back drop that we write this open letter to you, your excellency   save our souls   and liberate us from the shackles   of this powerful cabal within   the management of the company   who have boasted to have the presidency and their whims and caprice”.
