MAKURDI..A Makurdi High Court presided over by Justice Adam Onum has ordered Mr. Abiodun Oluwarotimi, the publisher of Nigerian Concord, to pay the sum of N5million to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state as damages for libel.
Delivering judgement in a case brought before the court by the Governor over series of publications against the person of the Governor, Justice Onum also ordered the publisher to retract the libelous publications in national newspapers, television, radio as well as social media platforms.
The Governor had demanded N10billion as damages in the suit which the defendant failed to put up appearance even after being served through substituted service as ordered by the court.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the judgement, the Governor’s lawyer, Mr. Andrew Wombo, who lauded the court for the judgment said, “I would take legal steps to enforce it.
“The objective of the case was to prove to the entire world that Mr. Oluwarotimi’s publications against the office and person of the Governor were false, fabricated and mischievous.”
“Though the motive for instituting the case was not for financial benefit i would make sure the defendant pays the money as a deterrent against those bent on publishing falsehood against the Governor.”
