ASABA—DELTA State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, yesterday opposed move to leave the payment of primary school teachers’ salaries with local government councils, insisting that the funding of primary education should remain the responsibility of state or Federal Government through first line charge.

Speaking during a protest to Delta State House of Assembly Complex, Asaba, the State Chairman of NUT in the state,, Comrade Titus Okotie, called on the state legislature to reject a bill aimed at transferring the payment of primary school teachers’ salaries to local government councils along with the quest for local government autonomy.

Okotie held that the NUT was opposed to the local government autonomy without removing primary school teachers salaries from the councils, stressing that it was the only way to save basic and primary education from imminent collapse.

He observed that some states were owing primary school teachers due to the inability of the local government councils to provide funds needed for payment of salaries.
