…As Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Kano, others celebrate Durbar with Oba Ewuare 11
OMO N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare 11, yesterday expressed his readiness to collaborate with other traditional rulers in the North and other parts of the country to ensure unity and peace in Nigeria.
The Oba who expressed his gratitude to the Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar 11, the Emir of Kano, the Etsu Nupe and other traditional rulers from the North for organizing a Durbar in his honour during his one year coronation anniversary yesterday, said he was committed to a peaceful nation, adding that the nation could only progress under a peaceful and united Nigeria.
He stated this at the Durbar ceremony organized for him by Northern traditional rulers, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City. The colourful event was attended by the Deputy Governor of the state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, Secretary to the state Government, Osarodion Ogie, the Crown Prince of Benin.
Other dignitaries included business mogul, Captain Hosa Okunbor, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, top Benin palace Chiefs, traditional rulers from Delta State and from the North. It was a colourful Durbar display from the ancient city of Kano and the Nupe Kingdom, Niger State.
Popular Nigerian musician Davido also entertained the crowd. Security was beefed up at strategic points in the ancient city to ensure safety of residents and visitors who were in the state to witness the ceremony. Incidentally, the ceremony coincided with the birthday of the monarch.
Oba Ewuare 11 stated that his kingdom would also build on the cordial relationship between Edo state and other Northern states to actualise the policies of the federal government.
According to the Oba,”We must continue our rapport, continue on our relationship. We will build on this relationship to make Nigeria a greater country. We will build on this relationship to bring peace and harmony to the country. I believe that Nigeria will be greater in unity and peace and we all must ensure that.
“We will build on this relationship to support the federal government in its policies to interact and relate with all other Africa countries in the continent”, he said.
Earlier, the Sarkin Nupe, while delivering his speech, said that the Durbar was to help unite the North with the South.
“This is to help elevate his majesty position to the eyes of the world and to ensure that there is unity in diversity especially when it comes to Nigeria as proposed by the federal government that there should be unity of purpose. The significance of the Durban to the Oba is to help unite the North and the south and to tell the world that there is unity in Nigeria”, he said.
On his part, Comrade Shaibu, the Deputy governor of Edo state, described the Oba as “father of all. He is somebody we all have high regards for. Our father has been very helpful and supportive to our administration. Since we came in, his royal advice and prayers have assisted this administration so well in its policies.
“His Majesty has ensured peace and unity across the state and it is a big lesson for all of us to emulate. Edo state is one just like Nigeria will remain one and united irrespective of the work of enemies of democracy. We pray that God Almighty will continue to keep you strong as you pilot the affairs of this great Benin Kingdom” he stated.
