The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Gbenga Ashafa while delivering a speech today at the Indomie Heroes Awards 2017, held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Ikoyi Lagos has set children and young ones on a mission to battle against the growing incidence of drug abuse among young people in Nigeria.
In his words “There’s a very important mission that I need to recruit smart superheroes for. I have been told that only heroes like you can solve this mission. Let me also tell you that there’s a great reward when you conquer this mission…The mission is a battle against the growing incidence of drug abuse among young people like you.”
The Distinguished Senator at the event after congratulating all the young ones who were recognized as heroes today, took out time to explain to the children and young ones the dangers of drug abuse and reminded them that being heroes of our time and the future of tomorrow they have a responsibility to avoid anything such as drugs that can derail them from achieving their dreams.
He went further to advice their parents to adopt a “catch them young” approach in guiding their children towards a drug free life. The Senator said “Dear parents, in helping your kids say no to drugs, the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) advises as follows: that you set rules for your children early, Have a plan with your children on how to avoid drugs early, Talk to your children about potential drug/alcohol situations and encourage them to tell you about experiences they or their friends have had and how they’ve resolved them.
While acknowledging that the menace of drug abuse is a national issue he said one of the easy ways of tackling the problem is to adopt a community based approach .
Distinguished Senator Ggbena Ashafa’s position on drug abuse has been stern. Since the inception of the 8th Senate he has been a passionate advocate against drug abuse by children and young ones in Nigeria. To this end he has sponsored a motion at the floor of the Senate titled “Nigerians involvement in Illicit Global Drugs Trade and Increase in Domestic Drug Abuse by Nigerian Youth” and a “Bill to amend the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act”
