Minna- Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, (FUT) Minna, Niger state, Professor Musbau Adewumi Akanji has alerted the Alumni Association of the University of the numerous challenges confronting it and therefore profer lasting solutions to them in order to safe the education sector.
Addressing the National Retreat/Stakeholders Reunion of the University in Minna, Niger state weekend, the Vice Chancellor said from the present development, it is evident that soonest, the future and survival of most higher Instituions, including FUT, Minna will lie in the hands of the Alumni of the various Institutions for their development.
According to him,”Education is now Technology driven and very expensive for only the Federal Government to bear and most Universities across the world now rely mostly on their Alumni to fund towards moving them forward.
The University has made you by packaging and marketing you to become a member of the Alumni Association and now, you have become the sales representatives of this University and you must therefore market the product, (the University) well and make it more attractive in order to be more acceptable to the public,” the VC remarked.
Professor Akanji enumerated some of the areas that need the immediate intervention of old students of the Institution with top priority on Hostels to accommodate both male and female students for their comfort and affordability.
“Give us an Alumni hostel. You don’t need millions of Naira to start. Not a masterpiece also but descent Hostel. The University is yours because you passed through it and it made you, but as for us, we can divorce it but you can take possession in future and this is why you have to maintain the Institution,” the VC reiterated.
The National Chairman and National caretaker committee, of the FUT Alumni, Dr.Jiya Mohammed acknowledged the positive contributions of some Alumni which he said have in no small way assisted the students individually or collectively.
He however said that the Association is faced with some challenged, but which he said are surmountable.
“I am very hopeful that we will all reflect on the objectives and vision the Association which is primarily to assist the Institution in areas of need and proffer solutions,” he declared.
The theme of the Reunion is “Creating Wealth outside Box”-what options for FUT Alumni and individual members.
Lectures were delivered on investments and and diversification and explorinthe aagricultural sector while prominent members of the public including past present Vice chancellors and Lecturers were honored at the Banquet night.
