National Chairman of PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi and former VP, Chief Alex Ekwueme during a courtesy visit.

In a congratulatory message issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party thanked the elder statesman for his visionary leadership and commitment to democratic ideals.

“The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, CON, on behalf of the entire PDP family nationwide, heartily congratulates the former Vice President, the Ide of
Oko and Aguta Kingdoms on the occasion of his 85th Birthday yesterday, October 21, 2017.

“Dr. Ekwueme was the 1st elected Vice President of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983 before the administration was rudely overthrown by the military
Junta of General Muhammadu Buhari.

“Ide as he is fondly called, is a man of many firsts, a Distinguished Architect with the First Indigenous architectural firm in Nigeria who
rose to preside over the Institute of Architects, and the Architects Council of Nigeria, a Lawyer, Sociologists, Philosopher, Historian, and Public Servant, trained in the USA and London, respectively.

“Apart from having served Nigeria in various capacities, His Excellency has been
making remarkable contributions in the growth of his community’s socio-economic condition especially, in the education of several youths
to universities in Nigeria and abroad through sponsorship from his Educational Trust Fund.

“It is noteworthy that His Excellency, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, GCON, is the founding Chairman of our great Party, the PDP, the first chairman of its Board of Trustees (BoT), who mobilized the Group of 34 (G-34) eminent Nigerians that rescued Nigeria and Nigerians from General Sani Abacha’s Military permutation of transmuting to a civilian President.

“Dr. Ekwueme is indeed an asset to this great country, Nigeria and the PDP in particular; and we will remain grateful to him and other
patriotic Nigerians that fought for the enthronement of democratic dispensation to date.

“As he celebrated his 85th Birthday yesterday (Saturday), we say happy birthday to him in arrears; and we wish him more years of happiness and good health as he rides on aging gracefully under the protection and guidance of the Almighty God together with his family.

“We urge His Excellency to continue making (sic) himself available to Nigeria and the PDP given his wealth of experience which will be
greatly required to stabilize the Country’s hard earned democracy,” the statement read.
