ABEOKUTA—Another clash between operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area Command, and suspected smugglers, this time at Ajilete village in Ipokia Local Government of the state, has reportedly led to the death of one person.

Vanguard gathered that the operatives got intelligence report, on Sunday, that some smugglers had taken three tokunbo vehicles into the village through the Idiroko land border from the neighbouring Republic of Benin.

It was further learned that the operatives later stormed the village in search of the smugglers and they succeeded in impounding one of the allegedly smuggled vehicles, a Toyota Tundra pick-up van.

An eyewitness told Vanguard that some hoodlums, suspected to be smugglers, barricaded the roads leading to the village with various objects, to prevent the Customs operatives from taking the impounded vehicle away.

Their action led to a shootout, during which a stray bullet hit a passer-by.
