Uyo—Hundreds of women from the five local government areas that make up Oro ethnic nationality in Akwa Ibom State, have called on the Federal Government to upgrade Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, to a university.
The women, who made the call during a peaceful protest at the academy, yesterday, lamented the recent suspension of 2017/2018 admission process into MAN Oron, describing the Federal Government’s action as suspicious and unfair.
They said that they were interested in maritime university and not in the Interim Management Committee inaugurated by the Federal Government.
The protesting women carried placards with inscriptions such as, “We need only maritime university,” “We want university and not Effedua,” “Buhari, call Amaechi to order,” “Sarumi and others, leave Oron now,” “We say no to Effedua,” among others.
Spokesperson and Vice President of Great Daughters of Oro Nation (from Urueffong Oruko Local Government Area), Mrs. Nkoyo Edung, said that the Interim Management Committee runs counter of the bill seeking for the establishment of a Maritime University, Oron, which had passed through third reading in the National Assembly.
