Jos—Nigerian Ambassador to Qatar, Dr. Bawa Wase, has lamented what he described as gross underfunding of the country’s embassies across the globe and called for urgent steps to be taken to address the situation.
Bawa, who spoke in Jos on Tuesday, also asked that besides having diplomatic ties with other countries, efforts should be made to key into the technologies and investment opportunities of those countries that could be beneficial to Nigeria.
He commended the over 10,000 Nigerians living in Qatar for not tarnishing the country’s image by engaging in criminal activities, pointing out that Nigeria’s bi-lateral relations with Qatar had the potential of yielding positive impacts on Nigeria in terms of manpower development, energy supply as well as agriculture.
Speaking on the challenges faced in the country, he said: “Generally, all over the world, you will find every system that needs some kind of panel beating.
“The only challenge I can talk about, though this government is trying to address it, is the grossly inadequate of funding of embassies.
“If you send somebody to another country and you don’t expect him to go anywhere to borrow, then you should adequately fund the embassies.”
