ONITSHA—University of Nigeria Alumni Association, UNAA, Onitsha branch has described as a national shame, the abandonment of Zik’s Mausoleum project located at Zik’s Inosi Onira Retreat, Onitsha, Anambra State.

The mausoleum is the  final resting place of Nigeria’s first president and Owelle of Onitsha, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

The alumni called on the Federal Government to complete without further delay, the mausoleum project, which it said has constituted a national shame, having been abandoned several years after Zik was laid to rest inside the Inosi Onira Retreat.

President of the association,  Chris Ajugwe, who spoke in Onitsha at the 57th Founders’ Day celebration, awards/workshop and induction of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe,  as its grand patron, said it was quite regrettable that such a laudable project initiated by the federal government during Zik’s burial in 1996 was yet to be completed.

On the current agitation for the restoration or actualisation of Biafra, Ajugwe, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to summon the political will and implement the manifesto of All Progressives Congress, APC, with respect to restructuring of the country.

According to him, “a faithful implementation of the recommendation of the National Conference of 2014 will douse the tension in the polity and safeguard our country’s unity.”

He described Igwe Achebe as a first class traditional ruler and maintained that he deserved the grand patronship award just bestowed on him and prayed for him to reign many more years on the throne.

Responding, Igwe Achebe thanked UNAA members for the honour done him and pledged to offer any possible assistance to them whenever the need arose.
