A YOUNG inventor based in Benin, Edo State, Mr. Lucky Chimekwele, has been granted a patent license to produce olein from red palm oil for edible and medical purposes for 20 years.

Speaking with Vanguard SMEs & Entrepreneurship in an interview, in Benin, the patent holder said with the patent granted to him, Nigerians will for the first time experience red palm olein in their food, just as he explained that olein was a fractionated red palm oil suitable for edible purposes.

He stated: “I am the sole patent owner of this product which is the first of its kind in Nigeria. I am the first person to fractionate and treat red palm oil to produce olein from it. My patent right is for 20 years and it will enable me to produce and market the product as food supplement for this period of time among other things.”

Health hazards

Chimekwele said olein  from red palm oil has no dangerous saturated fats and contains no health hazards as it has 15 times more carotenoids than carrot and 300 times more carotenoids than tomatoes, adding that it also contains safe nutrients like Vitamins A and E as well as Omega3 and  Omega 6 fatty acids.

“Red palm oil contains about 50 percent saturated fats, giving rise to cardiovascular diseases and also aggravates diabetes. Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of disability and premature death throughout the world and have being reported as one of the leading causes of death representing 31 percent of global death.

“Cardiovascular disease is a class of disease that involves the heart blood vessels, such as angina and myocardial infarction commonly known as heart attack. Other CVDs are known as strokes, hypertension among others. But with the use fractionated red palm oil (red palm oil olein), the negative effect of saturated fat, the increase in cardiovascular diseases will be completely eliminated.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) links the high rising of cardiovascular diseases to saturated fat and to make red palm oil safe for people, they don’t need to take saturated fat. So, all I did is to fractionate and treat red oil to get red palm olein and it is 100 percent safe,” he stated.
