UMUAHIA clash: UPP commends Army for releasing victims

The United Progressive Party, UPP, has commended the military high command for releasing tricycle operators arrested in their unfortunate clash with some soldiers in Umuahia, Abia State capital, last Tuesday.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ogbuehi Dike, UPP thanked the Army for listening to its call for an investigation to ascertain the true position of the matter as well as the whereabouts of the victims.

‘’Our position was based on the fact that there were conflicting reports on the issue and the fact that such issues, if not well-managed are capable of sending the wrong signal and worsen the situation in the region.

‘’We are therefore happy that the military high command in response waded into the matter leading to the release of the tricycle operators. In this regard, we are confident that the military would do the needful in getting to the root of the matter and putting necessary measures to avoid such clashes in the future,’’ it said

The party restated its call on the Federal Government to do all ‘’to douse the tension in the South-East region, especially with the recent heavy deployment of security personnel to the area, a development that has heightened fears in the region.’’
